HUBER DeWaTec Fixed-bed Plant 3K PLUS®
- Submerged fixed bed completely surrounded by wastewater
- Fully biological wastewater purification in three-compartment septic tanks or multi-container units
- One of the top-selling ’conversion kits’
- Stable operation even during low-load periods and with low ambient temperatures
- No rotating or electric wear parts under water
- Control unit with protection against failure in a separate control box
In the HUBER 3K PLUS® Process, a material which promotes the colonization of microorganisms to a particularly high degree is used as growth carrier (fixed bed).
The microorganisms contained in the wastewater colonize on the surface of the fixed bed and form a biofilm, by means of which the wastewater is treated.

A fixed-bed block consists of individual tubular elements of the same length and diameter, which have a net-like structure and which are welded together at the upper end. The individual blocks have a standard size of approx. 55 cm x 55 cm in different heights and are cut to size to match the geometry of the tank to be fitted out.
The fixed bed is always completely submerged. As a matter of principle, the entire area of the biological treatment stage is covered with the fixed bed. Depending on the height of the tank, several layers of fixed-bed blocks are arranged one above the other. The fixed-bed blocks are placed on special stainless steel supports and prevented from floating by special stainless steel suppression rods.
An aeration unit, consisting of HUBER membrane aerators, is installed under the supports and aerates the entire tank. The use of aerators of different lengths ensures that there are no non-aerated areas in the tank.
The biomass sheared off by the flow caused by the aerators is carried off as surplus sludge and deposited in the final sedimentation chamber. Contrary to the activated sludge process, it is not necessary to return the sludge to the biological reactor.
The following objectives were taken as the basis for developing the HUBER 3K PLUS® process:
- Utilization of the advantages of the biofilm, i.e., fixed bed, process
- Reduction of the tendency to clog vis à vis conventional biofilm processes
- Simplification of the process and mechanical engineering
- Optimum utilization of existing tank volumes and those to be installed.

Advantages of the HUBER 3K PLUS® Process
The HUBER 3K PLUS® process has been specially developed for use in decentralized wastewater treatment. The advantages are:
- A high treatment capacity combined with a minimum of control equipment (no sludge return equipment is required)
- Immobilization of the organisms on the fixed bed material prevents microorganisms being carried out of the biological reactor when hydraulic shock loads occur.
- Peak loads and concentrations are effectively buffered due to the high adsorption capacity of the biofilm. The cascade-type design also contributes towards buffering shock loads.
- Stable operation even in the case of longer low-load periods, since, although the biofilm adapts to the load, it does not completely disappear from the fixed bed.
- The regeneration capacity of the biofilm following toxic shock loads is high.
- Due to the automatic enrichment of the biofilm with specialized microorganisms (advanced sludge age), a high degree of adaptability to inflows of substances which are difficult to degrade.
- Low surplus sludge yield (approx. 1/4 to 1/10 of the quantity produced in the activated sludge process).
- The simultaneous discharge of surplus biomass (surplus sludge) due to aeration of the entire tank.
- Due to a fixed bed with an open structure and aeration of the entire tank, the wastewater constituents are uniformly distributed over the tank. (multidimensional mixing).
- No rotating or live parts in the wastewater. All technical equipment requiring mainentance or attention above water line in a soundproof control cabinet.

The Use of Biofilms in Wastewater Technology
Biofilm processes are particularly suitable for decentralized wastewater treatment since the microorganisms are immobilized on a surface and can, thus, not be carried out of the biological reactor even in the case of high hydraulic loads.
Because of their branch-like structure, biofilms have a very large adsorption surface, so that peak loads are very effectively retained, in that substances that cannot be processed immediately are stored, to a certain degree, on the biofilm and subsequently degraded during periods where nutrients are in short supply.
The microorganism colonies tend to have a high growth rate which, unless restricted, can lead to a clogging of the growth surfaces. The ever-increasing biomass (surplus sludge) must, therefore, be removed from the colonization surface (fixed bed) and carried out of the biological reactor.
This requirement can only be fulfilled to a limited extent with conventional biofilm systems (trickling filters, rotating biological contactors, etc.), particularly if the plant is overloaded. With plants based on the HUBER 3K PLUS® Process, this problem is solved due to the fact that the flow caused by the aeration unit, which ensures a supply of oxygen and nutrients to the biofilm, simultaneously controls the growth of the biofilm. The shearing stresses created in the biofilm by this flow detach the surplus biomass from the fixed bed. The surplus biomass is then carried out of the reactor with the stream of water.
