Much time and large space are needed for sludge drying, or heat.
Solar dryers use free sunlight energy, but not at all places shines the sun strong and is the sky mostly clear; and even where the average climate is very favourable, a very large footprint is needed to capture enough sunshine for sludge drying. Space is limited and expensive at most sites; and huge greenhouses do not come free.
For small to medium-size wastewater treatment plants, we have developed our solar regenerative drying system SRT.

To use some solar energy, it is installed in a green house. But we do not rely on sunshine alone; we also use other renewable and sustainable heat sources in order to keep the dryer compact and small:
Such a free energy source is wastewater heat. This heat is on a modest temperature level, but it is always available in sufficient quantity at any treatment plant. We raise its temperature with a heat pump so far that we can efficiently reuse this heat source for reliable low-temperature sludge drying.

A regenerative heat source can be the heat contained within wastewater. The temperature level of wastewater heat is rather moderate, but the heat is permanently available on each sewage treatment plant. We use a heat pump to raise the temperature up to a level that enables the reliable and efficient use of this thermal energy for low-temperature sludge drying.
The heat pump generates 4 to 6 kWh useful heat.
